Sally Magee Reynolds, 86, died peacefully on Sunday, August 27, 2017, in Houston following a very brief illness.
Sally was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on October 30, 1930, to Allyne Gallagher and John Atlee Magee, both from pioneer families in the Coastal Bend area. She had two younger brothers, John Atlee (Buddy) Magee Jr. and Richard DeWitt Magee. On April 24, 1954, she married Robert McBryde Reynolds (Daddy Bob), who also descended from South Texas families. Together they raised three children, Margaret, Chris, and Janie.
Sally’s loving husband, Robert, predeceased her in 2002. Her parents and her two brothers also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her three children: Margaret Henrikson (Jim), Bellaire; Chris Reynolds (George Ann), Tomball; and Janie Mason (Todd), Houston. She is also survived by Mollie Carter (Andy), Yorktown; her adoring grandchildren John Magee Henrikson, Elizabeth Henrikson Blount (Josh) and Emily Henrikson; Hannah Reynolds and Micah Reynolds; Richard Mason, Laura Mason, and Robert Mason; and Atlee Carter (Bethany), Caton Carter and Sarah Carter, as well as countless cousins and friends.
Sally, affectionately known by her grandchildren, family members, and friends as “Mama Sally”, was a Mother first and foremost. After that, she was a devoted Catholic, fabulous cook (forget about recipes), an incredible hostess, and, despite being unable to keep a secret, a wonderful confidant. She devoted her life to helping run the family business and providing her children with all the tools to be happy, successful adults. Before the term “tiger mom” existed, Sally perfected the concept with her own children. She didn’t demand perfection in them, only that they do their best (which had a very fluid definitions depending on the circumstances).
Family and friends were always welcomed and fed when they dropped in for a visit at her home. She could whip up a meal or batch of Christmas candy while other people were still looking for recipes. She taught her daughters to cook (but not by practice). She wanted to make sure they learned properly, so she had them watch her. The truth is she knew she could do it faster and better and didn’t want them wasting her time.
After her youngest child finished college, she and Daddy Bob opened a bakery in Robstown – “Sally’s Pantry”. This took her love of cooking to a new level. Her brother Richard (“Uncle Dick”) soon joined them and they moved “Sally’s “to Calallen.
Mother loved a party and tried hard not to miss the big events in her children and grandchildren’s lives. There wasn’t much “grey” in her life–it was either right or wrong, and if you were hers, there wasn’t much that was ever wrong! She spoke her mind and never left any doubt as to how she felt about almost any person, place, or thing she encountered. Mom truly believed that her white hair gave her super powers to express whatever was on her mind, regardless of who heard her say it!
