Private JOHN R. PETTY, Co. I, 86th Illinois

John R. Petty was born on March 17, 1836 at Timber Twp, Peoria Il, the son of John Petty and __________ (__________) Petty. According to the 1880 census, John's parents were both been born in Ohio. John Petty was born c. 1792/94, most likely in Ohio, but the 1850 census states he was born in Kentucky. John Petty was married to Sophia (Sams)on 9 Aug 1855, in Peoria Il. The Petty family may have come to Illinois in the late 1820 or early 1830's although it is not known if they came straight to Peoria County or not. John Petty is almost certainly the John Pellis found in the 1840 census of Peoria County living in LaMarsh Precinct. At that time, John's first wife is still living and is between the age of 30 and 40. John has two daughters listed as this time, one under the age of 5 (probably Sarah) and the other between 5 and 10 years of age (probably Mary). John is between 40 and 50 years of age. He has seven sons living at this time, one between 15 and 20 (probably Joseph), 3 between 10 and 15 (including Jacob and Aaron), one between 5 and 10, and one under the age of 5 (probably John).
Sometime between 1841 and 1847, John's first wife died. She is most likely buried in Peoria County. John Petty was married Margaret Jones on June 10, 1847 in Peoria County. Margaret Jones was born on __________ __, 18__ (c. 1820/21) in Ohio. One son, John, is believed to have been born to John and Margaret.
In the 1850 census of Peoria County, it is recorded on November 15, 1850 that the Petty family includes;
2850 Petty John 55 Farming 1,500 KY
2850 Petty Margaret 29 Ohio
2850 Petty Joseph 28 Farming Ohio
2850 Petty Aaron 21 Ill
2850 Petty Mary 19 Ill
2850 Petty John 13 Ill
2850 Petty Sarah 12 Ill
2850 Petty Hezekiah 9 Ill
2850 Petty John 2 Ill
2850 Petty Jacob 25 Farming 200 Ohio

(Note: Mary Petty may be the Mary E. Petty, who was born in 1832 and who married Daniel F. Shepherd, and who died in 1910. Daniel F. Shepherd was also a member of Co. I of the 86th Illinois. The Shepherds are buried in Union Cemetery, Peoria County, Illinois.)

John Petty died on August 30, 1854 in Peoria County. He may very well be buried with his first wife in Peoria County, but at this time it is not known where this is. After John Petty's death, Margaret (Jones) Petty is believed to have been married to Thomas Beasley on April 24, 1856 in Peoria County.

Now to continue with the biography of John R. Petty.
John R. Petty was married to Sophia (Sophiah) Mary Sams (Sames) on August 9, 1855 in Peoria County. Sophia was born on March 6, 1838 in Ripley County, Indiana. Sophia may be the daughter of Amon Sams, who was c. 1810, and Rebecca (Fiscus) Sams, who was born c. 1814. Amon was married to Rebecca on August 22, 1833 in Brown County, Ohio. Amon is believed to have died in Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois. At the time of the 1850 census, the Sams family is found in Ohio County, Indiana;

In December of 1863, a Captain Allen was in Peoria County, trying to recruit men to help fill up the thinned ranks of the 86th. On December 28th & 29th of 1863, John R. Petty, Ezekial Petty, John Cromwell, Andrew S. Green, John & George Glasford, and Cyrus Johnson all came into Peoria from Timber Township to volunteer as Recruits to help fill up those thinned ranks of Co. I of the 86th Illinois. The 86th at that time had been in service for a little more than a year and had just participated in the Campaign for Chattanooga. On December 28th & 29th, the men of the 86th were in north Georgia and were busy getting ready for winter and building shanties near McAfee's Church six miles south of Chattanooga on the Chickamauga, Georgia Battlefield.
The seven new recruits most likely joined Co. I in January of 1864, before they left Camp McAfee for the opening movements of what was to become known as the Atlanta Campaign. During the next 16 months, the seven new recruits would be there during some of the hardest and darkest of days for the 86th and participated in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including the Battles of Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia; Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, to name a few, and marched with Sherman "To the Sea."
In May of 1865, after the Civil War had come to a close, it was decided that Privates John R. Petty and Ezekial Petty and the remaining late war recruits Of Co. I of the 86th, would be transferred to Co. I of the 34th Illinois for a few more weeks of further duty. They were officially transferred to the 34th on May 18, 1865, but may not have joined the 34th until about the 2nd of June.
