TRIBUTES

*My husband, Bryan, and Jackie went to votech together in, I believe '95.
We have two differently able children that started school in 2006.
The guys were reunited and I just made a new friend. I grilled "Mr. Jackie", as he is known in our home, for almost an hour before I would let the kids ride the bus. (new mom worries)
The first time I put them on the bus, I cried. He got off the bus, gave me a hug and told me, "I'll bring them home. I promise." He asked me to have a little faith. In my emotions, I don't remember what I said back to him. What I DO remember is the smile and the laugh he gave in response.
Eleven years down the road and we were on to fried pies and helping with the kids I know.
Our daughter is prone to fits. She would sit for hours and yell "Mr. Jackie! Mr. Jackie! " over and over again. If he was close and not busy, he would do his best to calm her down because he needed her to help him find the houses. I guess that was their little game.
..
We are not a religious family. He and I had many talks about that. He never judged and always had a smile no matter what I said. I hope, wherever he is, he knows how much he will ALWAYS mean to my family.
I hope, even in my elder years, I will still remember his laugh and the smile he would wear even on the hardest of days.
I know he loved my babies and he is an irreplaceable energy in our life.
We've kept a light on for him, to help light his way.
I hope that he finds as much peace on this journey as he did spreading joy and compassion on this one.
"Mr. Jackie!! " We love you.
..
Peace be to you all.

A longtime Ada City Schools employee has died following a school bus accident Wednesday afternoon in Ada.

Jackie Cooper, 50, spent the last 12 years driving special education students to and from school, according to Ada City Schools officials. He would have turned 51 Thursday.

Ada City Schools Superintendent Mike Anderson said Cooper suffered “a significant medical event while driving a bus route yesterday afternoon.”

Cooper was able to divert the bus away from oncoming traffic before succumbing to conditions associated with the medical event just before 3 p.m. Wednesday. The bus crashed into a residential porch and parked trailer at the intersection of 14th and Maywood streets. Four children riding the bus at the time of the accident were not injured.

Cooper was taken by Mercy EMS to Mercy Hospital Ada. Emergency personnel at the scene of the accident said (his condition) was serious.

Anderson said Cooper passed away after more than two hours of medical attention following the crash.

“It is evident to me that Jackie did everything in his power to keep the bus and our kids out of oncoming traffic,” Anderson said in a prepared statement. “ No children were injured. In fact, they were superstars throughout the whole ordeal.”

Anderson said the children remained calm and showed a sense of awareness that everyone should be proud of.

“An (Ada Early Childhood Center) teaching assistant was working as a bus aide at the time of the accident,” Anderson said. “She is simply a hero in my eyes. She never lost her cool. She never left the bus. And she never left the children alone. She reacted to a tough situation with professionalism, selflessness, character and courage.”

Anderson asked school staff and community members to keep Cooper’s family in their prayers and to be proud of the performance of Ada students and staff during a very difficult event.

FRIENDS REMEMBER BUS DRIVER WHO DIED IN CRASH

By Sydney Gray | Posted: Thu 5:27 PM, Sep 28, 2017 Updated: Thu 6:56 PM, Sep 28, 2017

ADA, Okla. (KXII) - "We know where he went," Irene Banks said.

Irene Banks went to church with bus driver Jackie Cooper.

She struggled to find the words to describe how much he loved his community.

"I hate to see him go but ... you know," Banks said.

For last 11 years he drove the special needs bus for Ada schools.

On Wednesday afternoon that bus crashed into a home on 14th and Maywood Avenue.

"He had a medical condition might have been a heart attack, and he went unconscious veered off to the right into a house," Officer Marcus Beale said.

There were three students on the bus and one other adult, but none of them were injured.

"It was very evident when I got on sight that Jackie did everything he could to keep that bus and his kids out of on coming traffic," Ada Superintendent Mike Anderson said.

Banks says Cooper's goal in life was to spread the word of Christ.

"He was a good man and he was a good bus driver, and he always went through the counties, to all different churches to minister," Banks said.

Banks says she was with Cooper just hours before his death.

"He was cooking beans and ham hocks and his friend Henry was sitting there, and he was just being his normal self," Banks said,"next I knew he was gone."

"You don't work here this long unless you've got a good heart,"Anderson said, "and you're willing to make the sacrifices and that you understand that what we do here is what's best for the kids, and he carried that forward."

Anderson says Cooper will be missed by the entire Cougar family.
