Clayton Obadiah Stamey, 104, of Marion, N.C., for the past nineteen years, died Friday, November 23, 2001 at Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital.

Born June 27,1897, he was a native of Altamont, Avery County and was the son of the late Rev. Elias Alexander Stamey and Fyza Mace Stamey.

He was a farmer, blacksmith, teamster, builder, and nurseryman.

He also worked in the shipyards in Wilmington, NC and Mare Island, CA, during World War II. He was a veteran of World War I and a Real Son of the Confederacy.

Mr. Stamey is preceded in death by his first wife, Belle Bowman Stamey; two infant daughters: Mary Lee and Fanny Mae; one son, Paul A. Stamey; his second wife, Eva Murphy Stamey; and his third wife, Alma Burleson Stamey.

Survivors include a daughter, Nell Stamey Aldridge, of Crossnore, NC; a son, James Helton, of Jonas Ridge, NC; four step-sons: Clayton Burleson of Hickory, NC, Lloyd E. Burleson, of Marion, Roy B. Burleson, of Morganton and Clarence Murphy, of Charlotte; two step-daughters: Lois Marlowe, of Marion, and Melba Bartlett, of Marion.

Burial was in Stamey Family Cemetery, Avery County.
