Joyce Lay Gilbert,
age 81 of Knoxville, passed away Wednesday September 6, 2017 after a brief illness. She is the daughter of the late Carl and Nellie Lay, and the sister of the late Fletcher Lay. Joyce was a member of Central Baptist Church in Alcoa and attended West Hills Baptist Church, Knoxville.

Prior to her retirement she worked as a bookkeeper and accountant with her son, Greg. A talented musician, Joyce played piano and organ for several churches and groups. She typically was involved in the music ministries at the churches where her husband was pastor. Joyce was passionate about her cooking, her family, and her Christian faith. Joyce is survived by her husband of 64 Years, Rev. George W. Gilbert; her sons and daughters-in-law Greg and Beth Gilbert, and Dale and Angela Gilbert.

She is also survived by five grandchildren, Amy Geist (Ryan), Abby Smith (Jess), Gregory Gilbert, Austin Gilbert (Sayde) and Phillip Gilbert. Five great-grandchildren survive her as well: Will and Emily Geist, Sydney and Natalie Smith, and Olivia Gilbert. A special thanks goes out to Rhonda Thornton, Joyce's friend and caregiver, and to the dedicated staff at UT Hospital's MCC unit.

A Celebration Service will be held on Sunday, September 10 at 2:30 PM at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, with Rev. Greg Kelly and Rev. Dale Gilbert officiating. Dr. David Rankin, her friend and physician, will assist in the service. Receiving of friends will immediately follow the Sunday Celebration Service. She will be buried Monday in a private service.
