Harold Bernard Haley, Jr. MD
September 11, 1923 - September 28, 2017

In any conversation with anyone, Dr. Harold B. Haley always had a point that he wanted to make sure the person he was talking to learned from him and got the message. The other side of that coin, there was always something he wanted to learn from the other person. The guy could work a room. One of his favorite sports at any gathering, family, social or business, was tallying up how many people he had spoken with and how many he had not quite gotten to…just yet.
Harold had several great passions in his long life: His beloved wife of 72 years, Margaret Carroll Haley and their family; All things academic: especially cancer research; Travel: the more exotic, the better; Mesoamerican anthropology; Most importantly, helping people that became great doctors enter medical school who might not have gotten in otherwise. He was able to indulge in these passions only because of the strength and support of Margaret.
Harold is survived by Margaret; their five children, their spouses and grandchildren: Claudia of Berlin, Germany; Harry Haley and Mary Kay Skorcz of Arlington Heights, IL, their children John, his wife Marjorie and son Neil; Victoria, her husband Michael and sons Michael & Aidan; and Matthew; Patrick Haley and Brenda Stafford of Knoxville, TN; Mark and Julie Boland Haley of Bradford, MA, their children Mary and Brian; Greg and Michelle Haley of Roanoke,VA, their children Jessica and Ben.
Born September 11, 1923, Madison, WI, the only child of Harold B. Haley, Sr. and Annabelle Buchanan Haley, Harold attended the University of Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin, then St. Louis University Medical School while fulfilling his WWII military obligation as a Captain in the Air Force.
Post-military, he went to Harvard University’s Peter Bent Brigham Hospital to train as a surgeon. Then he began his true great calling, the education of young physicians. Medical education posts in addition to Harvard included Loyola University, Medical College of Ohio, University of Virginia and Baylor College of Medicine. At UVA, he launched a clinical residency program in Roanoke-area hospitals for UVA students. Many of them practice in the Roanoke Valley today. Post-retirement, he served as Associate Medical Director of the Carillion Clinic Hospice and Honorary Professor at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine & Research Institute.
His family is grateful for the care and compassion provided by all his doctors and nurses over many years. Like many physicians, he was not always the easiest patient. Thanks to all, including Dr. Robert Keeley, the Roanoke Memorial Hospital staff, the loving family of Home Instead caregivers, the Carillion Clinic Hospice team and many special friends, too numerous to name.
Visitation at St Andrew’s Catholic Church in Roanoke on Monday, October 2 at 10:30AM, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at Noon. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Carillion Clinic Hospice (1615 Franklin Rd SW, Roanoke, VA 24016), American Cancer Society – Roanoke Valley (2840 Electric Rd #106, Roanoke, VA 24018) or to the charity of your choice in Harold’s memory.
