Obituary of Lonnie Gibson

Rev. Lonnie Calvin Gibson, age 88 of Mt. Gilead, went home with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, a beautiful, sunny day.

Lonnie was born August 26, 1929 to Monnie (Atkins) Gibson and Hiram Gibson of Troy, NC. After marrying his wife, Coline in February, 1950, Lonnie served in the 26th Infantry Medical Company of the U.S. Army in Bamberg, Germany from 1952-54. Following his return home from service,Lonnie was supervisor with Smitherman Cotton Mill. Rev. Gibson pastored numerous churches throughout Montgomery and Stanly County over the course of 50 years. Along the way, Lonnie made an exceptional group of wonderful friends, whom he cherished.

Lonnie is survived by his wife of 67 years, Coline Harris Gibson; daughter, Karen (David) Almond; 2 granddaughters, Carmen Simpson and Courtney (Christopher Chisholm); 1 great grandson, Carson Chisholm; 3 step-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jason and Jarrod Almond; and 5 step-great grandchildren, David, Luke, Abigail, JoyAnna, and Joshua Almond.

Lonnie is also survived by sisters, Joyce Jarrell, Patricia Cooke, Evon McIntyre, and Ruby Hunsucker, all of Troy, NC. Lonnie was preceded in death by his dear daughter, Melinda Jane Gibson, and sisters, Shirley Elam and Frances Kelly. Lonnie's devotion to his family was unfailing.

A special thank you is made to the staff at Bethany Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Hospice's of Stanly and the Uwharries.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 29, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Pugh Funeral Home in Troy, NC. A service with military honors celebrating Lonnie's extraordinary life will be held Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Troy, NC. with Rev. Rodney Holmes and Rev. Grady Blakely officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family requests that Memorial donations be made to Gideon's International.
