Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather Paul William Melton passed away the morning of August 9, 2017 at Cottage in the Meadow surrounded by family. A gracious and loving man, Paul enjoyed growing up on the family farm near Cowiche and carried his love of farming and animals throughout his life. He was born March 4, 1928 to parents John and Louise (Ribkey) Melton in Yakima, WA and graduated from Highland High School in 1949.

His marriage to Donna Sharpe in 1950 lasted for 28 years. Later he married Joyce Dairymple in 1981. Paul developed a remarkable talent in athletics and he played 5 years of semi-pro baseball as a pitcher and gained notoriety as an inductee in the Yakima Softball Hall of Fame (fast pitch) in 1984. Paul honorably served in the National Guard when called into service in 1951. The love of athletics carried throughout his life as a coach in many sons’ sports associations in the valley and his love of animals evidenced by years leading 4-H activities in sheep and horse events. He loved showing horses with his daughter. His dog Red was a key companion over many years.

Paul farmed and then applied those skills in over 20 years working in the Yakima Valley.

Paul is survived by two sisters, Darlene Bunger and Donna Mae Evans and by brother Robert Melton all of Yakima; four children, Diane, Mike, Rod and Diana (his best and favorite daughter); six step-sons; two great-grandchildren; many grandchildren and other family members. Paul’s wife Mary preceded him in death.

To remember Paul and his contribution to the valley, his family suggests that donations be made in Paul’s name to Cottage in the Meadow where he received very kind and expert care.

A Celebration of Paul’s Life is planned for Thursday, August 17th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Terrace Heights Memorial Park with reception to follow at Rainier Memorial Center.
