David Schley Schaff, B.A. 1873. Born October 17, 1852, in Mercersburg, Pa. Died March 2, 1941, at Winter Park, FL. Father, Rev. Philip Schaff, D D., LL D. (attended universities of Tubingen, Halle, and Berlin 1837-40), author and teacher; professor Union Theological Seminary 1870-93, son of Philip and Anna (Schindler)Schaf of Chur Coire, Switzerland. Mother, Mary Elizabeth (Schley) Schaff, daughter of David and Anna Mary (Hoke) Schley of Frederick, Md. Prepared at gymnasium, Kornthal, Germany, and Phillips-Andover; attended New York University 1869-70. Entered Yale College beginning of Sophomore year, in Senior year president of Yale's first football club and coach and member of her first football team, generally regarded as originator of intercollegiate football in America, member Kappa Sigma Epsilon, Delta Beta Xi, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Delta Kappa Epsilon.
