Joyce Evelyn Burford Montgomery of Houston, Texas died peacefully in Birmingham, Alabama surrounded by her loving family at age 81 on Saturday, September 23, 2017.
She was born in Columbus Texas on May 20, 1936 to James and Eddie B. Burford. She attended Columbus High School and Prairie View A&M University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She later received her Master's in Nursing from The University of Houston. Most of her professional life was spent as a school nurse at Wheatley High School.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 56 years, Gary Cooper Montgomery; siblings, Samuel Burford, Ruby Burford McCoy, and Sandra Kay Burford Thompson.
She is survived by her two children, Laura Montgomery-Barefield M.D. (Wayne Barefield M.D.) of Birmingham, Al; Gary C. Montgomery Jr. (Abena Sandy-Montgomery) of Houston; grandchildren, Alyssa, Jordan, and Maya Barefield and siblings Jimmy Carter (Chester), Mary Temple (C.Alton), Theresa Adams (Leo), Robert (Yvonne) and Larry Burford (Brenda).
Services will be held at Pleasantville United Methodist Church, 1403 Demaree Lane, Houston, TX 77029
