He graduated from Northeast High School and from Pittsburgh State University. Roy was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Margye McLaughlin on May 3, 1957 in KCMO. Roy started working in the construction products industry in 1957 and later established his own firm, Sunshine Industrial Inc. in Merriam, KS. Roy was an aviation enthusiast & historian, a pilot, and one time president of the KC Aerobatic club. Hobbies included painting and restoration of antique cars.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margye Thornton.
