RICHMOND, Va. — Mr. Jerry Twain Westmoreland, 74, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away of cancer on September 2, 2017, at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Westmoreland was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, on January 28, 1943, to the late Twain and Nina Westmoreland. He grew up in Mount Airy and later graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shortly after, he married Wenona Fern Watson of Ararat, North Carolina and began flight school in Gary, Indiana. He was eventually hired by United Airlines as a pilot in the late 1960s and went on to spend his entire 30-year career at United, ultimately finishing his final years of service as Captain of one of United's Boeing 777 aircraft. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Amy Westmoreland of Richmond, Virginia, his brother, Ted Westmoreland of Hillsville, Virginia, and his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sarah Westmoreland, and grandsons Jacob, John, and Matthew of Richmond, Virginia. In addition to close family members, he is survived by nieces and nephews, Audrey, Lee, and Tracy Westmoreland plus dozens of cousins and extended family on both the Westmoreland and Puckett sides. He always attended the Puckett Family reunion every summer until the final years of his life. Visitation with family and friends will be 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the fellowship hall at Little Mountain Baptist Church in Ararat, NC. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 4 p.m. at Little Mountain Baptist Church, followed by a reception at 5 p.m.
