Actor. He was best known for his role of Pontius Pilate in the musical sensation "Jesus Christ Superstar" on the album, the stage, and on the "big screen". After graduating from UCLA, he began his career in New York City, performing in workshops and on the cabaret circuit while living with, and nurturing the career of his then-girlfriend Barbra Streisand. After a couple of years, he went to England to seek his professional opportunities there. While in England, he was selected to perform as "the Emcee" in the West End production of "Cabaret". His performance in this production earned him an "Evening Standard Award for Best Actor". Later in 1970, he was invited by Andrew Lloyd Webber to perform as Pontius Pilate on the album "Jesus Christ Superstar". A year later he was chosen to play the same role in the original Broadway version and two years later, in the film version. In 1966 he made his first appearance on television in the series "Blue Light". He would go on to perform in various television series during his career with such credits as "Batman", "Monster Squad", "Wonder Woman", "Q.E.D.", "Remington Steele", "Hill Street Blues", "The Tortellis", "Murder, She Wrote", and "Murphy Brown". Besides "Jesus Christ Superstar", he also appeared in numerous films during his career with such credits as "Fiddler on the Roof" (1971), "Brannigan" (1975), "Rabbit Test" (1978), "The Shining" (1980), "Ragtime" (1981), "Superman III" (1983), and "Titanic" (1997). He continued performing on the stage in various theatrical productions during his career. He was also well known for his voice work for various animated series and films and video games. He passed away after suffering a fall at his home in California.
