Norma Jean Estes, 87, died at 12:32 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 22, 2017) at home in Danvers, surrounded by her loving family.

Norma was born on June 21, 1930 in Normal, a daughter to Melvin T. and Lorine Hill Shumaker. She married Lyle J. Estes on Dec. 23, 1950 in Clinton. He preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 2014.

Surviving are her children, Norman L. (Janet) Estes, Larry D. (Sha) Estes, Jeff (Tammi) Estes and Amy (Jeff) Talbert , who was like a daughter to her; grandchildren, Jason Estes, Renee (Evan) Welch, Jessica Estes, David (Nicole) Estes, Elaine (Nick) Brown and Mark Estes; brother, Gerald Shumaker; sister, Sharon (Jim) Underwood and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Norton Allen Shumaker and Marvin Shumaker.

Norma graduated from Normal Community High School in 1948 and attended Illinois State Normal University. She married Lyle, and they later moved to Danvers where she worked at Oehler's Grocery Store. She was also the clerk of session at First Presbyterian Church in Danvers for many years. Norma was a Cub Scout den mother and a 4-H leader. She was a member of the Danvers Pinochle Club and enjoyed going to Carl’s Ice Cream with the First Presbyterian ladies group every Sunday.

Norma loved her family and was so proud of their accomplishments. She shared her love of board games and card games with her family and was often the one to initiate games during family gatherings. Norma had a unique take on the English language, inspiring her family to create an online dictionary celebrating her words and phrases. She had recently become a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching their games on television. Norma will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
