US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the 10th Congressional District from the State of Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives from 1963 until 1999. During his 36 years of service, he held the distinction of being a member of the Congress during the administrations of eight US Presidents. He attended parochial school and later the University of Notre Dame, prior to receiving his Law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he worked as a clerk for former US Congressman and Chief Federal Judge John W. Murphy. He went on to serve as city solicitor in his native Scranton, before succeeding William Scranton (who went on to become Pennsylvania's governor) in the Congress. During his tenure, he served on the House Appropriations Committee and provided funds to revitalize downtown Scranton. In 1992, he was indicted on charges of racketeering, conspiracy and accepting bribes. He was later acquitted. He died of complications from Parkinson's disease.
