Mrs. Cooper was born the daughter of Rev. Thomas Durant Mercer and Lois Jeanette Blakely Mercer on June 23, 1942 in Georgetown. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School. She attended Holmes Bible College, Coastal Carolina University, University of South Carolina, and Williamsburg Technical College fulfilling her Early Childhood Education required courses and continuing education courses. She received her degree from the University of South Carolina and taught in the Williamsburg County School system for 30 years. She began her spiritual journey in the Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church. After marrying Dickie, she joined the Trio United Methodist Church and faithfully served over the years. As a mother and wife Judy found her greatest joy as she loved cooking, cleaning house, and doing laundry. She enjoyed painting, restoring furniture, and reading. However, she was always happiest when her home was full of family and friends with lots of food and laughter.
Judy and Dickie were married on May 19, 1962 and celebrated 55 years together. Their home was blessed with: two children, Daniel “Danny” (Renee) Cooper, Jr. and Julie C. McCants; five grandchildren, Evan (Brittany) Cooper, Nicholas (Whitney Powell) Cooper, Taylor (Ken Morris) Cooper, Lee McCants, and Seth (Wendy) McCants; 10 great-grandchildren, Danielle, Kristen, Jackson, Emalyn, Evy, Paxtyn, Presslee Ann, Palmer Kate, Hadley, Emmette. She also leaves behind: a brother, Blakely (Clarice) Mercer; a sister, Wanda (Carl) Ray; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by: her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Tommie Annie (Lloyd) Tisdale.
A Home Going Celebration was held at Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Rev. Gary Adams assisted by Nancy Adams, Rev Dean Baber, Rev. Wayne Cox, and Rev. John Smiley officiated the service.
The Cooper family received family and friends immediately after the service at a reception honoring Mrs. Judy in the Family Life Center.
