James Norell was the first Director of Communications for the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action. In the words of NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, “Jim Norell spent a lifetime in service to our Second Amendment freedom. He fought throughout his lifetime with words that made an immeasurable difference -- words that defended firearms in the hands of good, law abiding, patriotic Americans. His words helped change the course of American history.” Early in Mr. Norell’s career, he worked at the Washington Star and then as press secretary for Idaho Senator James McClure. During the 1990s, Mr. Norell joined with his brother, Michael Norell, writing scripts for television movies. When he and his wife moved from the D.C. area, they made their home on their small farm in rural Three Springs, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Norell died in 2012. Mr. Norell died while vacationing in Chincoteague. He was survived by their daughter, his brother, and his fiancée, Tammy von Mansberg. Jim and Tammy had planned to marry on October 21, 2017. There was a memorial service for Jim on November 18, 2017, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Mount Union, Pennsylvania.
