BIRTH LAST NAME - LEWIS

Frederick's Mother, Ethel Kagy Elliott Lewis, died in 1939 at age 44, of breast cancer. His father, Frederick Elwin Lewis, died in 1942 at age 69. Frederick was adopted by friends of the family in 1942 at approx. age 7 with consent of his dying father. The adoption was arranged by minor Frederick's older sister Alma Margaret Lewis. The father's death and the county adoption both took place in July, 1942. Minor Frederick's name then changed from Frederick Harrison Lewis to Frederick Heldt. Geneology is ONLY related to biological ancestors. This information obtained from actual adoption records, Monterey County, court stamped 1942 and 1943.

Frederick was the youngest child of seven children. Several of the children were adults at the time of the parent's deaths. Older sister Alma Lewis had guardianship of Frederick in 1942, when the father was hospitalized for illness for several months in 1942. She arranged the adoption with a family (The Heldts) in the community of Pacific Grove, where both families resided. Although the father was very ill, he was able to consent to the adoption about three weeks before his death. Infor obtained from court records.

Per original birth certificate, Frederick's original name was Frederick Harrison Lewis, before being changed to Frederick (nmn) Heldt. This is also verified via a court record stamp dated 13 Jan. 1943, generated by the state Department of Social Welfare via the Superior Court in Monterey County in regards to the state sanctioning of the adoption. Lines 11.5-14 on page 1 states, "Minor, Frederick Lewis, Jr., whose birth certificate reads Frederick Harrison Lewis, was born in Pacific Grove on December 31, 1934. Natural parents, Frederick E. Lewis and Ethel Elliott Lewis, were married in San Francisco on June 21, 1919 and died in Pacific Grove on July 4, 1942 and May 18, 1939, respectively."

Obit for Frederick Elwin Lewis (his father) in the Monterey Peninsula Herald on 06 Jul 1942 indicates he was survied by son, "Frederick H. Lewis," along with other listed children.

Obit for Ethel Elliott Lewis (his mother) in the Monterey Peninsula Herald on 18/19 May 1939 indicates she was survived by son "Frederick H. Lewis," along with other listed children.
