Jack Goosen, 70, passed away at his home on March 8, 2007, after a long battle with cancer.
Derry Jack Goosen, "Mr. Baseball," was born March 13, 1936, in Adams, to Harris and Wilma Weller Goosen. Jack's early years were spent in Adams where he attended Adams public schools. He played basketball for the Adams Apaches where he was known as "Gunner Goosen" for his precision outside shots.
He graduated from Adams High School in 1954. Also during that time Jack helped with the family farm and the Goosen grain elevator.
Shortly after graduating from high school, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attending boot camp in San Diego. He was later shipped to his homeport of Pearl Harbor. While in the Navy he was a gunner's mate traveling to various ports making frequent stops in Sasabo and Kobe, Japan; Hong Kong, and New Zealand.
While docked, Jack played third base for the Navy softball team, which began his life long passion for baseball. He served four years in the Navy aboard the USS Grasp AR and the USS Hassayampa.
Upon returning to Adams, Jack was united in marriage to Bonnie Lou Morris on the date of June 15, 1958. Jack and Bonnie moved to Amarillo while Jack attended barber school.
After graduating, he moved to Hooker and began Jack's Barber Shop in 1960, and continued working on the family farm until retiring from both just a few short years ago.
He also served as Hooker Public Schools board member, American Legion Commander and Treasurer for several decades.
In 1969, Jack started the Hooker Horny Toads American Legion baseball team. He coached and managed the Horny Toads for nearly three decades.
On the side he was very involved with the Hooker Babe Ruth baseball team and also helped with the Hooker little league baseball association. For his long service to Hooker Baseball and the countless youth, on Jack Goosen day, the Hooker baseball field was officially renamed "Jack Goosen Field."
Jack was also the voice behind the microphone for both the Horny Toads and the Hooker Bulldogs basketball for some 30 years.
In his family life, Jack loved to attend OU football games with his sons and grandsons. He was also a constant fan at most all Bulldog games regardless of miles and distance till illness prevented him from attending. Jack will be remembered for his tireless work ethic and his altruistic life dedicated to the community, youth, and family.
Jack leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Bonnie Lou Goosen; two sons, Tony Goosen and daughter-in-law Karen of Hooker; Scott Goosen and daughter-in-law Leigh Ann of Oklahoma City.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Debbie Lou Goosen.
His grandchildren include Darcy Mallard, Jacque and Eli Fowler, Harrison Goosen, Kristin, Brandon, Alexis, and Rachael Goosen; Great grandchildren Eric and Rhiannon Mallard.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Hooker High School Gymnasium, with Brother Jim Roebuck of the First Baptist Church in Hooker officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Inc. in Hooker, Oklahoma.
Visitation will be Monday from 3-9 p.m.; Tuesday until the time of service at the Hooker High School New Gymnasium.
