Edmund was the son of James C. Callaway and Sarah Bramblett. His father died when Edmund was 3 years old and he went to the Kentucky area of Virginia when he was a teenager. There he joined his brothers, Flanders, Micajah and William, and was a chain carrier for Daniel Boone in 1784. He is in the Fayette Co., KY tax lists from 1788 through 1795. He is in the Bourbon Co., KY tax list in 1796. He married Athaliah Wright there on 3/29/1796. They moved to Clark Co., Ky where he owned the Winchester Hotel and other property just outside of town on the Mt. Sterling Road. They had 9 children while they were living in Clark County. They started selling off their property in 1813 and Edmund is in the 1815 Christian Co., Ky tax list. In 1817, he bought 770 acres on the road from Hopkinsville to William Means house on the Sinking Fork of the Little River. This is apparently near Newstead. Their last child was born in Christian Co. in 1820.

Edmund was in the War of 1812, fighting at the Battle of the Thames. There is an account written by Sympson about their experiences getting there, fighting and getting back home. Fascinating reading.

In 1817, Edmund was a Charter Member of the Unitarian Church in Christian County, KY. His Will divided his property equally among all children, and directed a "liberal education" for both boys and girls.

Their children were: Elizabeth b. 1797, Married Charles B. Clark in 1814 Clark Co., KY; Sarah Athaliah b. 1798, married John Thomas Dawson Cheatham in 1814, Clark Co., KY; James Wright Callaway, b. 1799 in KY, admitted to the Bar in 1824 in Christian Co., KY; William Dudley Callaway, born 1801 married Inez B. L. Barnard, Amanda Wigginton and Mary Glenn, died 1885 Holt Co., MO; George Fletcher Callaway, born 1803, died before 1810, Clark Co., KY; Samuel Taylor Callaway, Christian Church minister, b. 1808 married Mary Means in 1830, Christian Co., KY, died 1875, Douglas Co., IL; Mary Ann Callaway, b. 1810 married Edward Payne and John O'Bannon, died 1868 in Jackson Co., MO; John Chesley Callaway b. 1815 married Mary Catherine King 1840 in McLean Co., IL, died 1866 in Mahaska Co., IA; Fanny Mariah b. 1818. married Wilson John Adamson 1834 in Christian Co., KY, lived in Todd Co., KY; Susan Jane Callaway, b. 1820 in Christian Co., KY (the only one not born in Clark Co., KY), married Greenup Dawson 1842 in Trigg Co., KY, died 1879 in Trigg Co., KY of Consumption (TB).

I'm trying to find out where Edmund was buried and exactly where they lived in Christian Co., KY. If anyone knows, please contact me. Thanks. Julia M.
