Rev. Lukens, Broadcasting Pastor, Dies
HAYWARD - Private funeral services will be held for the Rev. Charles E. Lukens, Jr., director and pastor of the Valley Church of the Air, who died Saturday. He was 79.
The Rev. Mr. Lukens, a native of Illinois, was a law school graduate of the University of Southern California in 1917 who decided to train for the ministry. He graduated from the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo in 1921.
The Rev. Mr. Lukens started his Valley Church of the Air in 1936. At one time, 10 radio stations carried the program. Four stations, in San Francisco, San Jose, Modesto and Long Beach, aired it at the time of his death. In addition to this weekly program, he also had a nightly program six times a week on station KLS, now KDIA, for some 30 years. The Rev. Mr. Lukens was also, at one time, pastor of the Hayward Presbyterian Church and the Castro Valley Union Church.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; a son Paul Lukens of Taft; two brothers, Mitchell Lukens of Pasadena and John Lukens of Altadena; and two grandaughters.
