Funeral services for Mr. Newton R. (Bob) Churchwell, age 97, are scheduled for 3 PM, Sunday, September 24, 2017 in the chapel of Pafford Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Lexington Cemetery.

Mr. Churchwell passed away early Friday morning in Lexington. He was born May 18, 1920 in Lewis County, Tennessee to the late Newton Daniel and Viola Ann Carroll Churchwell. He was a 1948 graduate of Lexington High School, attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, transferring to the University of Georgia where he received a degree in Forestry. He was a WWII U. S. Navy Veteran, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8) and various other locations in the Pacific Theater. After the war and after earning his high school diploma and completing his college degree, he embarked on a career with the Tennessee Division of Forestry that lasted more than 30 years. At various points in his career he served as Assistant State Forester, and managed the Pinson Nursery. He was involved in research and development in the area of tree improvement. He founded Churchwell Pest Control Company in 1969.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Helen Sikes Churchwell and six sisters, Rowena Clayton, Cora Hinson, Grace Pace, Alida Bailey, Thelma Grimes, and Florene Runions.

Survivors include his brother, John A. Churchwell (late Sarah) of Columbia, Tennessee, eight nephews- James Larry Sikes, Johnny Wayne Churchwell (Jeraldean), Frankie Runions, Granville Grimes, Paul David Sikes, Eric Sikes, Mark Sikes (Brenda), and Tim Sikes (Jane); and four nieces- Joyce Runions, Phillis Gail Churchwell, Deborah Lewis (Ted), and Lisa Hart (Layne).
