Jonathan Bradford Morgan, ninety-seven, died peacefully September 5, 2017 at his sister's home, the Hon. Jane Morgan O'Neill in Atherton, California. Jonathan was born at home in the Twin Peaks area of San Francisco and was a Resident of Pebble Beach, California at the time of his death.
Jonathan Morgan attended St Agnes, St Ignatius and what is now Golden Gate University in San Francisco and received an Executive degree from Stanford in Transportation Management. He is a Mayflower descendant of William Bradford and a member of a pioneer California Family.
Jonathan Bradford "JB" Morgan was a retired Financial Controller for the Western Pacific Railroad (WPR) as well as a private investor. JB started and ended his professional career at the WP interrupted only by World War II (WWII). He was hired into the marketing department in 1938 and quickly decided he liked working with the accounting department. It was not a surprise to his family, that he liked accounting as he had loved working for his Uncle doing payroll for his construction company at an early age. JB Morgan worked his way up to a Financial Controller position. He was very proud of the WPR and the railroads' role in trying to break the near monopoly of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was a sharp accounting executive who shared his deep knowledge of WPR Finances with the President and Board of Directors He was highly respected by his colleagues at the WPR and was sought out by many Railroad historians for his encyclopedic memory for all things related to the WPR. He was always looking out for the best interests of the Western Pacific Railroad and retired after 45 years of service.
JB volunteered to be a pilot in the US Army Air Force but ended up as a disbursements officer because of his strong accounting background. He is a veteran of WWII and served in the European theater stationed at an RAF Airfield located on the outskirts of London. We enjoyed hearing the occasional story about his experiences with WWII Aces or bumping into some of the Generals stationed in London. He earned an American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
JB is survived by his twin sister the Hon. Jane Morgan O'Neill. He was the youngest son of the late Horace Bradford "HB" Morgan and Hendrena "Rene" Schaffield Morgan residents of San Francisco and Pebble Beach California. HB and Rene had four children the late Adam Morgan, the late Walter Morgan, Jane Morgan O'Neill and JB Morgan. JB was loved, admired and respected by the O'Neill and Morgan families. We're very grateful for the special care given to JB in his last years by his caregivers: Charlie Milag, Ljiljana Derokov Medic, Nancy Dela Pena, Rosemarie Polo, Doralyn Arajs, Patisua Fakalata and Thomas Perez. They were all very special caregivers and they all improved the quality his of life and made it possible for us to keep JB at home.
The Committal service will be on September 22, 2017 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma at 11:30 AM. Friends and Family are invited to join us for a luncheon celebration of his life at 1:00 pm at the Basque Cultural Center, 599 Railroad Ave., South San Francisco.
Family & Friends are also welcome to attend a Memorial Mass to be held at the Carmel Mission Basilica, Carmel at 10:00 AM on October 10, 2017.
