Vernon G. Piehl Sr., 70, of Ainsworth, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 23. Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Roland Going will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery...
Mr. Piehl was born June 29, 1916, in Brookings County, S.D., to Otto and Elizabeth Boldt Piehl. He received his education in the Winson Township School and began farming north of Arlington, S. D. On April 10, 1936, he married Leona Nabors in Illinois. They farmed near Arlington, S. D. In 1951 he moved to Grand Island where he was a coast-to-coast trucker for a Grand Island trucking firm. From 1955-1959, he worked for the Grand Island City Cab Co. In 1959, he began working for the Niedfelt Sand and Gravel Company in St. Paul and also the Platte Valley Construction Company in Grand Island.
He married Louise Ann Stenka on April 10, 1966, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island until moving to Ainsworth in June of 1982. Mr. Piehl worked for the Newport Gravel Co. At the time of his death he worked for the Ainsworth Sand and Gravel Co. Mr. Piehl was a member of the Lutheran faith, Eagles Aerie No. 378 and the Platte-Duetsche Society of Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steven of Ainsworth and Vernon Jr. of Bibbon; two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Carolyn) Helm of Maple Grove, Minn., and Mrs. Joan Delgadillo of Garden City, Kan.; five brothers, Lyle, Otto and Orlynn of Arlington, S. D., Lowell of Pueblo, Colo., and Donald of Marshall, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Ervin (Valla) Thurow of Madison, S.C.; four step-children, Mrs. Rosal Franssen of Alaska, Richard Ogden of Loup City, Dewayne Ogden of Ainsworth and Marcia Alcora of Grand Island; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 12 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-son, Mark Ogden.
