It is currently unknown who Mary Ann's parents were exactly, she had a dark and mysterious childhood that she never spoke about. It is known that a women named Jane Taylor is listed on her birth certificate and that Mary Ann may have born in the Union Workhouse at Lanchester, Durham. She also used previous last names, Taylor, Rutherford and Davison. Which is correct, if any, is unknown.

At some point in her late teens, early twenties, she became the common-law wife of Robert Hutchinson Adamson. She appears in the 1881 UK Census with Robert, Roberts parents and daughter Jane Ann Taylor, living in Kimblesworth, Durham. No record of marriage has ever been located. Robert and Mary Ann went on to have 4 daughters and Jane Ann took on the Adamson last name. Their daughters were Jane Ann, Margaret, Mary Ann, Agnes Ann & Ann, all born between 1877 and 1890.

At some point in 1892-1893 Mary Ann left Robert and moved to Ipswich with her youngest daughter Ann. She became the common-law wife of Alfred Walter Gooding and had three more children; Eliza, Mary Elizabeth & John Edward. All three children carried the last name of Gooding. The children were born between 1894 & 1901. Once again, no record of marriage exists for Mary Ann & Alfred.
