In the death of Cyrus Horton, early last Thursday morning, Arapahoe lost one of its most indefatigable workers in the up-building of the town, an honored citizen, and an ex-city official. He had lived here 33 years, and was 77 years old. He had been in ill health many months.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church Friday afternoon, conducted by Elder C. P. Evans. Interment was in Arapahoe cemetery.
An outline of the life of the departed would necessitate an historical sketch of the settlement and growth of Gosper and Furnas counties. He visited the country in 1879 and homesteaded the following year nine miles northeast of Arapahoe. In 1890 he moved into town, where he always identified with progression, serving five years as mayor and several terms in other municipal positions. The following obituary was read at the service:
Cyrus Horton was born at Frome, Elgin county, Ontario, February 2nd, 1836 and died at Arapahoe, Nebr., May 15, 1913. He leaves a wife and nine children: Henry Horton, Mrs. Laura Toler, Geo. E. Horton and Stella all of Arapahoe, Charles W. Horton, Cheyenne, Wyo., Mrs. E. Atkinson, Shedden, Ontario, Mrs. P. W. Campbell, Denver, Colo., Mrs. W. H. Eager, Dorchester, Nebr., W. E. Horton, Beaver City, Nebr. All were present except Charles Horton and Mrs. E. Atkinson. He was married to Eliza Firth, in 1861. Eleven children were born to this union, all of whom are living except two daughters. Moved to Nebraska in 1880 and has been a resident of Arapahoe and vicinity since that time.
