Rebecca L. Cavender

Portsmouth - Rebecca Laird Cavender, 98, died February 7, 2014. A native of Crisfield, MD, she was the widow of Carlton Burris Cavender and a retired cafeteria supervisor with the Chesapeake School System. Rebecca was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church. She was an organist at Simonsdale Presbyterian Church, Westhaven Baptist Church and retired from Cottage Place UMC. She was a past worthy matron of the Eastern Star Driver Chapter #149.

Survivors include a son, James Andrew Cavender, Sr. and wife Jaxie of Wallace, NC; a daughter, Janet C. Monday of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Pam Monday English and husband David, James A. Cavender, Jr. and wife Cathy, and Carlton E. Cavender and wife Opel; and two great-grandchildren, Krystine Smith and Alec English. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Carleton English for his nightly phone calls through the years; Corrine, Debbie, Juanita and LaTonya and the staff at Maryview Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Feb. 10, at 11 AM in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by Dr. Bruce Powers. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Westhaven Baptist Church, 4900 Caroline Ave., Ports., VA 23707. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com
