Evelyn Emorie Matthews, 96, of Oak Grove, Missouri, died September 15, 2017 at her home.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 19th at First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, with an Eastern Star service at 12:30 p.m., visitation from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., and funeral at 2:00 p.m., followed by burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Crossroads Hospice Care or First Baptist Church of Oak Grove.
        
Emorie was born August 21, 1921, in Leeton, Missouri, the daughter of Ezra “Palmer” and Beulah Ellen (Mills) Shaeffer.  She attended school in Leeton, Missouri, and graduated from Leeton High School in 1940.  Emorie met Pete Matthews in 1946 at a filling station that Pete co-owned in Leeton, and they were married that next January 18, 1947 in Ottawa, Kansas.  They resided in Chilhowee, MO until they moved to Oak Grove in 1985.  Emorie and Pete joined the Order of Eastern Star in 1947.  Emorie worked her way through the organization to Worthy Grand Matron for the State of Missouri in 1983.  She held a dual membership in the Warrensburg Chapter #3 and Oak Grove Chapter #407.  Emorie and Pete became members of First Baptist Church of Oak Grove in 1985.  They belonged to the Goldenheirs Senior Sunday School Class.  Emorie also served on the Funeral Dinner Committee, where she was well known for her prized meatloaf.  Emorie had several accomplishments to her credit.  She was a full-time homemaker while her children were in school.  Emorie and Pete were avid fans of the Chilhowee High School Sports Leagues and actively involved in cheering on their home teams.  After their children were grown, Emorie took on the role as Postmaster for the Chilhowee Post Office for about 2 years.  Emorie has traveled all over Missouri and touched many lives throughout her 96 years.  She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
 
Emorie was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Denny Matthews in 2015; one brother, Clarence Shaeffer; and son-in-law, Larry Jones in 2009.
 
Her survivors include her husband, Pete Matthews of the home; her daughter, Connie Jones of Blue Springs, MO; daughter-in-law, Peggy Matthews of Independence, MO; two granddaughters: Samantha Canterbury of Grain Valley, MO, and Misty White (Steve) of Independence; three great-grandchildren: Dalton White of Independence, Alyssa White of Independence, and Madison Canterbury of Grain Valley; and one brother, Denzel Shaeffer of Richmond, MO.
