Erma Hicken Brown, age 90, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at St. Luke's hospital in Lee's Summit, MO.

Born March 18, 1927, she was the daughter of Lucas Christian and Ida Belle Coleman Hicken, of Higbee, MO. After high school graduation, Erma attended business school in Kansas City while sewing for a custom dressmaker, Euphemia Lewis, who was also a long-time family friend. Erma loved sewing from childhood and she was talented and prolific, making most of her daughters' and her own clothing for many years, as well as upholstery, draperies and décor for her home. She made her daughters' prom and wedding dresses and also sewed wedding dresses for sisters-in-law and nieces. Music was also essential to Erma. She sang through every day, as well as with church and civic choirs. She was still singing with joy at the John Knox Village church service days before her death.

Erma and Alguin Bragg Brown were married December 24, 1946, in Moberly, MO, soon after Bragg's return from serving with the U.S. Navy in World War II. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Christmas Eve, 2016. After their marriage, the couple lived in Columbia; Erma worked at State Farm Insurance while Bragg attended the University of Missouri. After his graduation, they farmed in Randolph County, Missouri until 1959, when they left farming and moved to Liberty, MO, before moving to Marshall, MO, in 1968. They lived in Marshall for more than 40 years, where they were devoted and active members of First Baptist Church. Erma was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and treasured the friends she made and the organization's activities. Erma retired from the Missouri Dept of Mental Health in 1997.

She is survived by her husband, Bragg, who resides at John Knox Village, Lees Summit, MO, two daughters, Susan Brown Folkert, Waco, TX, and Laura Brown (Michael) Drewel, Lees Summit, MO, son, Martin (Judy) Brown, of Coleman, WI, and son-in-law, Neal Brandt, as well as 11 grandchildren, Jeff (Jill) Folkert, Jill (Kevin) King, Jaime (Tony) Anderson, Sarah Brandt, Julie (Eric) Dantes, Katy Brandt, Amy (Keith) Farquahar, Rachel (Nick) Thiry, Stacy (Phill) Evans, Aaron Drewel, Alyssa Drewel, and 12 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lucas and Zoe Folkert, Aubrey King, Andrew and Alex Anderson, Cassie, Ben and Andy Brandt, Lilabeth and Elleka Dantes and Jarrett Thiry. She is also survived by her sister, Ione DeJoia, two sisters-in-law, Nolie Mayo and Billie Hicken and two brothers-in-laws' spouses, Beth Brown and Jim Preston.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathy Brown (Skip) Berthold, Atlanta, GA, and Sandra Brown Brandt, Springfield, MO, her parents, her parents-in-law, Aubrey and Margaret Brown, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Listle (Ruby) Hicken, Roy (Mildred) Hicken, Orlin (Lillian) Hicken and Harold Hicken, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Trellas (Otto) Helmich, Evelyn (John) Cuba, Rosana and Dena, four brothers-in-law, Carmen DeJoia, Charles (Betty) Brown, Norvel (Pauline) Brown and Forest Brown and two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee (Ralph) Cochran and Katie Preston.
