Hathaway: A Mass of Christian Burial for John Young, 77 of Hathaway, LA will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Raymond, LA on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM with Father Bill Miller and Msgr. Ronald Groth officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings beginning on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM and continuing until 9:00 PM with a rosary recited by Deacon Mike Tramel at 7:00 PM on Sunday evening. The family request that visitation resume on Monday, beginning at 8:00 am until the time of service.

John will be laid to rest in Doucet Cemetery. Carrying John to his final resting place will be his grandsons: John Logan Pickles, John Paul Williams, Joshua Williams, Lane Williams, Christopher Young, and Richard Middleton. Honorary pallbearers will be Natasha Mallett, Mikka Gotreaux, Desiree Young, Britani Young, Stephanie Fleming, Glen Istre, Nicholas Mallett, Allie Pickles, Chrissie Williams, Timothy Gotreaux, and Eric Fleming.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Istre Young of Hathaway, LA; his son, Ronald (Joyce) Young of Hathaway, LA; his three daughters, Ramona (Mark) Williams of Elton, LA; Marilyn (George) Pickles of Lacassine, LA; Patricia (Tony) Williams of Hathaway, LA; his brother, Gilbert (Brenda) Young, Jr. of Lafayette, LA; his sister, Coralie Bouley of Hathaway, LA; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild plus one on the way.

John now rejoices in heaven with his parents, Gilbert and Lelia Young; his brother, J.B. Young; and his grand-daughter, Toni Dione Williams.

John Young was born on February 3, 1940 to Gilbert and Lelia LaVergne Young. He was called home by his Heavenly Father on Thursday, September 14, 2017. John was first and foremost a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His life was dedicated to the Salvation of his family. He was a dedicated servant of God Our Father, his son Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. John worked for 39 years for LA D.O.T.D. holding many job titles. He was a dedicated member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church for the majority of his life. John was a loyal and productive member of St. Lawrence K of C Council # 4787, holding many offices on all levels within the state of LA. John often saw a need and provided the necessary manpower and assistance to fill that need.

John was an extremely active person and enjoyed most sports, golf being his most enjoyed sport in his later years. John also took great pleasure in being surrounded by and mentoring his earthly family, especially his grandchildren.

John’s passing will leave a tremendous void in the lives of his family, friends, and those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
