Surnames of Radcliff, Rawsthorn, Sagar, Hargreaves can be found in this area of Lancashire as early as 1311, quite probably earlier. British History writes: " In 1435 all the lands Sir Nicholas Radcliffe had of the gift of Sir Richard Radcliffe of Clitheroe at Catlow in Marsden, he granted to Sir Richard's son James Radcliffe. This James in 1449 granted his manor of Catlow and lands in Marsden and Scholfield to Richard Radcliffe of Clitheroe. William Radcliffe of Winmarleigh had land in Great Marsden at his death in 1561"

Mary Rawsthorn, daughter of Richard Rawsthorn of Olden [sic-Holden] County Lancashire, deceased, married James Radcliff, son of Richard Radcliff of Chappel Hill in Rossendale, County Lancashire on 1mo/Mar 5, 1673/74, at the house of widow Mary Rawsthorn of Olden [sic – Holden] “in ye presence of Richard Radcliff & Mary Rawsthorn parents. . . ¹ [Note: Holden was originally a part of the Lord of Clitheroe]

[They married at the home of her widowed mother, Mary Rawsthorn, not her own home nor was she the widow referenced in the marriage record as is stated in PA Mag. Vol. XI, p. 315]

Among the Witnesses were: Henry Wood, Abrah’m Heyworth, Richard Hargreaves, Henry Hargreaves, Henr: Birtwisle, John Wood, James Hoult, John Ecroyd, Bernard Spencer, John Gryme, Ellis Scholefield, John Radcliff, Nicholas Rawsthorn, John Rawsthorn, Tho: Hargreaves, John Hargreaves, Richard Gryme.

Of those witnesses (a) John Ecroyd m. Alice Pollard in 1678; he died 1722 in Briefcliff, Lancashire. He was an eminent Friends Minister and half-brother of Grace Vipon who married Thomas Pearson, of Rossendale; Thomas Pearson & family having come to the colonies in 1699 on the ship “Britannia” whereon Thomas died and Grace died just weeks after arrival, leaving 3 orphaned daughters Grace (Heaton), Elizabeth (Stackhouse) & Sarah (Woolsten). (b) Mary’s brother Nicholas Rawsthorn m. Ann Gryme in 1676, etc.

James & Mary (Rawsthorn) Radcliff of Musbury in Rossendale, Lancashire received a Certificate of Removal from a Meeting held at John Ecroyd’s in Lancashire dated 4mo/Jun 18, 1685 to travel to America. It was signed by over 30 witnesses, several witnessed the marriage above, i.e. John Radcliff, John Rawsthorn, Henry Birtwisle, Abraham Heyworth, etc. ²

It is claimed that “James, Mary, Richard, Edward, Rebecca and Rachell Ratcliffe” with “James Hayworth, probably his nephew, and two others as servants" came to the colonies on the ship "Rebecca of Liverpool" commanded by James Skinner and arrived on the Delaware on 8mo/Oct 31, 1685. Citation to follow once I have verified same.

The 4 verified children of James & Mary Radcliff were Richard b. 1675 [m. Martha Stapler]; Edward b. 1678, d.1715 [m. Phebe Baker]; Rachel b. 1682, d. 1715 [m. Wm Hayhurst] and Robetta b. 1685, d. 1714 [m. John Hall]. Son Edward Radcliff would marry Phebe Baker, one of the 9 children of Henry & Margaret (Hardman) Baker, in 1703 – a step-sibling relationship.

James & Mary Radcliff settled in Wrightstown where he died in March, 1690 and was buried on the 29th day of the “ffirst” month 1690 in Bucks County. Later re-writes give the “fifth” month, but a review of the original record clearly states ”ffirst” month. ³

The death of James Radcliff is referenced in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in “Friends in the Ministry from Europe” wherein it states he settled at Wrightstown, Bucks County; he began to preach at age 15; died 1690; was a noted preacher. His widow, Mary wrote a Testimony to him which includes “I had knowledge of him when he was but young. . . he was a Prisoner upon Truths Account at about 15 years of age . . . he travelled many miles and through many hardships, Imprisonments & many other exercises” before and after their marriage; the Testimony was signed by Mary Radcliff on 10th month/Dec 1690. ⁴

Mary (Rawsthorn) Radcliff married 2nd widower Henry Baker on 8mo/Oct 13, 1692 at the house of Henry Baker, under Falls Mtg in Bucks. William was the son of Thomas & Jane (Bond) Atkinson who came from Yorkshire to the colonies in 1681 by Certificate from Beamsley Mtg near Skipton.
