Donna Loree (Fish) Harrington, 82, of Pittsburg, formerly of Columbus and Mound Valley, died at 11:50 A.M., Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Frontenac.
She was born in Pawhuska, OK on October 26, 1934 to Cecil Page and Edna Wilhelmina Emma (Nickoley) Fish.
Donna moved with her family from Jennings, OK to Mound Valley, Ks in 1937
where she attended grade school and graduated from Mound Valley High School in
1951. She continued her education at Parsons Junior College, graduating in 1953. She
began study at Kansas State Teacher’s College (now Pittsburg State University) the
summer of 1953 as a piano performance major where she studied privately with Will
Humble. She was united in marriage on December 27, 1953 with David R. Harrington,
Jr., who preceded her in death in 1998. They lived in Pittsburg and Cherryvale, KS and
moved to Columbus, KS in 1966. She completed her Bachelor of Music in Piano
Performance at PSU in 1972.
She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Parsons, Pittsburg,
Cherryvale, and Independence, KS. She worked at Stanley Bank in Columbus, KS for
fifteen years. During her outside occupations, she continued to give private piano
lessons in Parsons, Pittsburg, Cherryvale, and Columbus for over fifty years. In the
nearly forty-five years they were together, she and David had the blessings of two
children, Mark and Ellen, their daughter-in-law Carol Gorman Harrington, and two
grandchildren, Madeline and Gabriel along with many, many friends. She was also
married to Gordon Cox.
Her church membership was with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Columbus.
In her later years she also attended St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Joplin, MO and St.
Peter’s Episcopal Church in Pittsburg.
She was a member of the P.E.O sisterhood for a number of years, serving as
president as well as other officces, including delegate representing eight chapters from
SE Kansas to theInternational Meeting. She has been a member of the Pittsburg Treble
Clef Club and the Cherryvale Crescendo Music Club for many years and has performed
with a piano trio, as a piano soloist, and as a duo-pianist for these groups. She served
as accompanist for many soloists in Cherryvale, Columbus, and at PSU as well as for
community cantatas. Since 2006 she has enjoyed an association with Judy Hix of
Pittsburg as an ongoing duo-piano team presenting several programs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David, and her sisters,
Wilma Karstetter and Norma Gragg. Her survivors include her son Mark, his wife Carol,
of Raymore, MO, her daughter, Ellen, of Pittsburg, two grandchildren, Madeline and
Gabriel, her brother Cecil Fish and his wife Bonnie, of Ottawa, KS, four nieces, four
nephews, and several grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held in the parlor of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday,
September 19 at 7:00 p.m., and the Requiem Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal
Church on Wednesday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s. The cremains will be
placed in Mound Valley, KS. In lieu of flowers, please remember the Will Humble
Memorial Piano Scholarship at PSU or St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Pittsburg.
