Michael J. “Mike” McGovern age 49, of Wanamingo passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his loving family after a hard fought battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Minneola Lutheran Church with Pastor Hannah Bergstrom de Leon officiating. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Michael John McGovern was born on August 27, 1968 in Shakopee, MN. He grew up in Shakopee and started working as a carpenter. Mike was currently the owner/operator of McGovern’s Real Estate Repair. On April 22, 2016 Mike married his sweetheart of ten years, Karen Schaffer of Hampton.
Mike was dedicated to his family and loved to spend time with his grandchildren. His second passion was riding his Harley and being involved in Bikers Against Child Abuse, where he rode under the name “Brick”. Mike was also a member of Minneola Lutheran Church.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Karen; best friend and buddy, Bullet; children, Calvin McGovern (Liz), Bobbie McGovern (Dan), and Luke McGovern (Stormie); grandchildren, Terrance and Peighton; stepchildren, April Embree (Shawn) and children, Austen, Colsten and Zaylee, Rachel Schaffer and children, Evan and Crue, Gary Schaffer Jr (Britteny) and children, Karlie, Kailyn and Krosby, and Kelly Sellner (Dillon); sisters, Debbie Rank (Sandy) and Patty Utech (Allen) and brother, Tim McGovern (Kim) and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Terrance McGovern.
