Obituary

M. Murphy, whose death occurred at Omaha, on Friday, March 9, from a complication resulting from grippe, was born in county Wexford, Ireland, March 15, 1835. Orphaned at an early age, he came to America with relatives, when but eleven years old, and settled at Galena, Ill., where his youth was spent and where he attended the common schools of that period.

In 1868 he was married to Eliza A. Humphrey, at Maquokita, Ia. She and their two children, Mrs. C. G. Ryan, of this city and Earl D. Murphy, of Minneapolis, survive him. Mr. Murphy came to Grand Island in 1876, and established the photographic business in the then pioneer community. He was elected mayor of the city in 1882, serving one term, and was secretary of the school board for a number of years. In 1889 he was appointed postmaster by President Harrison, serving one term.

Eleven years ago, Mr. Murphy and wife moved to Omaha, where he was actively engaged in business up to the day of his last illness.

The funeral services were held from the home of his daughter on Lincoln avenue, on Sunday afternoon, and were in charge of the Masons, of which Mr. Murphy was a member for forty-five years, being at one time grand master of Ashler lodge. Reverend Arthur read the services at the house, and Grand Master Robert Watson conducted the Masonic ritual at the grave.

Mr. Murphy was a man of gentle and kindly spirit, who saw only the virtue of his fellow men, and numbered his friends among all people with whom he came in contact.
