Raymond Joseph Drennan, 94, of Holmdel, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Raymond was born on November 16, 1922 in Hoboken, and was raised in Jersey City, where he lived for the majority of his life. For a period of time, Raymond lived in Toms River and Florida, before settling in Holmdel. Raymond was a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran, having proudly served our country during World War II. He served on Guadal Canal and Okinawa; he was one of only 60 survivors of the Battle of Sugar Loaf Hill on Okinawa, which was one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history. He was wounded in battle on May 18, 1945 while fighting in Okinawa, which awarded him The Purple Heart. He was also the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Medal with Bronze Star, and he and the fellow Marines of the 6th Marine Division , received the Presidential Unit Citation Award. After the war, Raymond joined the Jersey City Fire Department and retired as Captain after 28 years of loyal service. In his spare time, Raymond coached little league at Washington Park in Jersey City, as well as volunteering at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church. Some of his favorite hobbies were fishing and crabbing, and he loved spending time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Frances (Coghlan) Drennan, and his beloved wife, Marion (Giordano) Drennan; his siblings, John, Thomas, Kenneth, Stephen, Frances and Jane Ann. Raymond is survived by his loving children, Raymond Joseph Drennan Jr. of Forked River, Maureen Lonergan of Holmdel, Dennis Drennan and his wife, Camille, of Stuart, Florida, John Stephen Drennan and his wife, Jeanne, of Hazlet, Kevin Drennan and his wife, Cathy, of Stuart, Florida, Robert Drennan of Clermont, Florida, Mark Drennan of Toms River, Patrick Drennan and his wife, Denise, of Hazlet and Paul Drennan and his wife, Suzette, of Toms River. He is also survived by his dear siblings, Florence Flannery, Gerald Drennan and his wife, Lorraine, along with 32 cherished grandchildren and 38 adored great grandchildren. Raymond will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 3269 State Highway/Route 35 North, Hazlet, NJ. A prayer service will be offered at the funeral home during visitation hours. In respect of Raymond's wishes, he will be privately cremated.
