Eulogy:

Capt. Robert E. Flolid, US Navy, Ret. passed away on Sept. 16, 2017 at the age of 89, one year after the death of his beloved wife Cynthia.
Robert Eugene Flolid was born on August 7, 1928 in Little Falls, Morrison County, MInnesota to Dr. John H. Flolid, D.C., and Alice (Lien) Flolid, the youngest of their five children. Both of Bob's parents were descended from Norwegian immigrants. Bob grew up in Little Falls, Minnesota where he graduated from high school. He attended college at St. Cloud State (MN) and received a B. A. in Accounting. Bob then joined the Navy and continued his education at the Naval War College.

In 1955, Bob married Cynthia Douglas, and they enjoyed Navy life to its fullest, spending 26 years at various Naval bases.
He and Cynthia enjoyed their travels around the world with the Navy, and made friends wherever they were stationed. Some of their posts were at Naval bases in the Azores, Pensacola, FL, San Diego, CA, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where they fell in love with that area of the country, and chose to retire at Kittery Point, Maine, in a colonial cottage built in the 1700's.

Bob then continued his career in the private sector, as business manager at nearby Berwick Academy, and Cynthia and Bob enjoyed the community activities around the Kittery Point area. They made lifelong friends that they enjoyed in their later years, with picnics, parties and dinners out.

They were comfortable being at home surrounded by good books, treasures from their travels, and after a life on the move, their pets - cats and dogs. Both Bob and Cynthia had a soft spot for animals, and their cats knew it, taking advantage at suppertime. Bob and Cynthia loved observing the nature around them, especially the salt marsh habitat behind their house, and fed and watched the visiting birds, turkeys, crows, raccoons, and other animals that came to their feeding stations near the house. Bob and Cynthia also supported local conservation organizations, such as the Kittery Land Trust.

Cynthia and Bob enjoyed life's small pleasures, and had their favorite routines wherever they went, whether it be a weekly visit to a favorite restaurant, visiting friends, or taking walks at their favorite locations. After retirement they would travel to Florida for several weeks in the winter, and stop to visit friends from their Navy days on the way. In Florida they enjoyed getting up early and going to the beach with their coffee, newspaper, or a good book.

Bob was a lifelong golfer, and at age 88 could still golf under his age. He was well known at his local course, the York Country Club in York, Maine, and was always ready for a game of golf, wherever he traveled. His sense of humor and easy-going personality reflected a golfer's philosophy of life, once telling his nephew, "If things aren't going right, just pick up your ball and move on to the next hole.”

Bob was so good about sending cards and letters, staying in touch with relatives and lifelong friends. He and Cynthia enjoyed having visitors, both in Maine and in Florida, and they loved to share their favorite activities, dining, and tourist sites with their guests. Bob's Naval background came out when he scheduled activities during these visits. He would discuss the next day's itinerary the night before, and say "Wheels up at 8:00". And 8:00 on the dot is when the car left the driveway.

Bob and Cynthia are on their adventures together again. Bob will be missed by his sister-in-law Margaret Flolid of Little Falls, Minnesota, his 13 nieces and nephews: Pat, Barb, Linda, Mark, Cynthia, Julie, Jim, John, Chuck, Bill, Ron, Susan and Nancy, and his many friends near and far.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia (Douglas) Flolid, his parents John and Alice Flolid, siblings Howard Flolid (of Texas), Marjorie Flolid Cook, Kenneth Flolid, and Everett Flolid (all of Minnesota).

If you’d like to raise a toast to Robert Flolid, and a life well lived, it should be a small glass of Riesling, with two ice cubes. No more, no less.
