Charles R. Crowell, 83, of Chetopa, passed away at 7:09 AM, Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Columbus, Kansas.

He was born March 6, 1934 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Olin and Mary (Tamm) Crowell. He grew up and attended schools in South Dakota until his family moved to Longton, Kansas in 1950 where he graduated from high school there in 1952. Following high school he went to work at Moline, Kansas and later Wamego, Kansas. He worked for several months at Beechcraft in Wichita. He then went to work for the railroad and worked on the bridge and building gang. He attended the Pittsburg State University where he started his interest in the newspaper business.

He entered the United States Army in February of 1957 and spent two years in the Army Artillery, 17 months of which he spent in Darmstadt, Germany and was discharged in 1959. He then went to work at the Garnett Publishing Company and later the Ottawa, Kansas Herald newspaper.

On December 1, 1967, Charles and his brother, Bob purchased the newspapers at Chetopa, Altamont, Edna and Mound Valley, Kansas. In 1976, they founded their corporation, Crowell, Inc. when they purchased the Oswego Independent newspaper. He remained in the newspaper business until selling the papers to the Taylor family which continues to operate the newspapers.

Charles was united in marriage to Joan McNamara on April 20, 1963 at the Cathedral in Kansas City, Missouri. To this marriage two children were born, a son, Ralph David Crowell and a daughter, Sheri Kristine Crowell. His wife Joan, preceded him in death on May 28, 2016.

They attended the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chetopa and now were members of the Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego. He had also been a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his daughter, Sheri Dalton and her husband, Jim of Corpus Christi, Texas; four grandchildren, Nathan Withrow, Shane Withrow, Amanda Partain and Megan Crowell; two brothers, Bob Crowell of Oswego, Kansas and John Crowell of Minnesota and one sister, Janet Lacy of Arizona.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his son Ralph and his wife, Julie Crowell, and one sister, Vera Ferry.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at the Mother of God Catholic Church in Oswego with Fr. Larry Parker officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Rose Cemetery at Chetopa. Military honors will be given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Parsons. The Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday at the church. Friends may call at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa after 11:00 a.m., Monday.
