Shirley Louise Gaines, wife of Ronald Gaines, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.

Born in Sumter County on Jan. 12, 1963, she was the daughter of the late Willie Gerrow Jr. and Bessie Mack Gerrow. Shirley attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Hillcrest High School in the Class of 1980. She continued her education at Central Carolina Community College. She later enrolled at Saint Leo University, where she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in human relations and worked on a master's degree in accounting from Schreyer University in Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Gaines was known as a motivated business professional with a talent for mastering technology. In her early years, Shirley was a member of the Union Baptist Church-Wedgefield, where she sang in the choir.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Gaines of Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Sherron N. Gaines of Tallahassee, Fla., and Rhonda S. Gaines of Chesapeake, Va.; a stepson, Quentin English of Dalzell; two sisters, Joann M. (Booker T.W. Jr.) Rice of Columbia and Margie M. Hennessey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; mother-in-law, Nettie Gaines of Wedgefield; a devoted niece, Quantina S. Hennessey of Fayetteville, N.C.; two nephews, Darryl D. Earley of Charleston and Dauvon L. Gresham of Atlanta, Ga.; three aunts, Mary Stewart of Clearwater, Fla., Rose D. Conner and Ellen Shadd of Philadelphia, Pa.; two uncles, Leroy Mack of Wedgefield and Joseph Mack of Clearwater; one brother-in-law, Leroy Gaines of Chesapeake; three sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Union Baptist Church, 300 Odom Lane, Wedgefield, with the pastor, the Rev. Travis S. Holmes, officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Mrs. Gaines will be placed in the church for viewing at noon Friday until the hour of service.
