He served in the United States Air Force and then Civil Service in the Eglin AFB Fire Department. He transferred to Tinker AFB Fire Department in 1968 and retired as Fire Chief in 1986. His retirement followed the "Fire of 3001" which was the largest recorded fire by the Department of Defense until September 11, 2001. Following retirement, he served as the Safety Inspector for Putnam City Schools in Bethany, Oklahoma.
James is preceded in death by his wife, Lora Lee Dunkin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. Dunkin; his brother, Thomas L. Dunkin; and his sisters, Mary Krieger, Dorothy Wilson and Belva Steed. He is survived by his wonderful wife of five years, Martha Ward Dunkin; three children, Donna Mohling, Debbie Smith (Steve), and Jim Dunkin (Leslie); two step-children Angela Ward and Sam Ward (Sonya); thirteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
James was devoted to his family with love, kindness and support. He was also a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, and he expressed his faithfulness as a dedicated member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Bethany First Church of the Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma.
