Former Madison resident Matt Duffy, 55, died September 12, 2017, at Hospice in Branford, Connecticut. Matt was born April 1, 1962, in Naperville, IL, to Robert A. and Mary Ellen Duffy. He lived in Madison from 1962 until 2011, when he moved to Guilford.
He graduated from Daniel Hand High School in 1980, and from Johnson and Wales with a degree in Culinary Arts in 1982. Matt shared his culinary skills with us at various eateries along the shoreline (The Old Schoolhouse Deli, The Angus Corral, The Dolly Madison Inn, Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale, Chip’s Pub II, and Griff’s Diner). Matt’s diabetes wouldn’t allow him to stay in his profession very long, even though he received a kidney from his brother Timothy and a pancreas from an organ donor. He continued to put those culinary skills to use for family and friends, and we are thankful for that.
Matt lived a majority of his life on River Edge Farms Rd, and continued to do odd jobs for the neighbors until his health challenges made this impossible. One neighbor recently commented, “He was the glue holding the neighborhood together.”
Family (biologic and otherwise--he treated his friends as family) was always at the center of Matt’s world. He was preceded in death by our parents, Mary Ellen and Robert A. Duffy, and his dogs “RAD” and “Foose.” He is survived by four brothers: Thomas Duffy and wife Maureen of Sharon, MA, Timothy Duffy of Norwich, Patrick Duffy and wife Terry of Madison and Robert Duffy and wife Cheryl of Hays, KS; and two sisters: Mary Ellen Duffy Ballard of Indianapolis, IN, and Margaret Doherty and husband Brian of New Rochelle, NY. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, and his canine buddy “Doc.”
Those who knew Matt were lucky and loved--and often laughed along with him.

Friends may call Friday morning Sept. 15 from 9:30 – 10:30am at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Margaret’s RC Church St, Madison. Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Route 1, Madison. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
