Elvira and her husband William H. Standart arrived in Colorado Springs in 1874. An announcement of the opening of their boot and shoe store appeared on May 9 1874. The store was in the "Holmes building" on Tejon St. across from the post office. By 1875, the store employed 4 men.
Elvira died on May 10,1875 one year after the store opened.
She was 53 years old and listed as a mother. little is found prior to their arrival here.
There was a fire in William's store on May 20, 1876 which caused $300. worth of damage. The fire appeared to be set with an excellerant. Col. Bacon's stable next door had to be evacuated. After the fire, William fled to Denver. Many lawsuits were filed against him for debts he had incurred even before Elvira's death.
