Raymond Wilford Greene, age 86, died Wednesday morning, September 13, 2017 at his home near Jacks Creek.

Mr. Greene was born and reared in Chester County, the son of the late Thomas Henry and Jewel Lafayette Cherry Greene. He went to school at Wilson School House and served in the United States Marines from 1951 through 1953. He was a Lance Corporal in the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Tank Battalion, C Company at Camp Lejeune, NC and was an expert mark’s man and then served six years in the reserve.

He married Mable Sue Holder in 1954 and they made their home in Chester County. He worked a few years at Caterpillar and had worked as a timber cutter all his adult life. He enjoyed building stock cars and drove on dirt tracks around West Tennessee for many years. After he wasn’t able to drive he passed on his knowledge and love of racing to his sons and son-in-laws, and taught some of his grandchildren and great grandchildren to drive. He was an accomplished auto mechanic.

He is survived by his wife Mable Sue Holder Greene, a son Curtis Greene (Debra) of Lexington, five daughters; Sandra Rinks of Henderson, Debra Henley (Jackie) of Holladay, Patricia Thompson (Randy) of Henderson, Cheryl Cox (Terry) of Henderson, and Lisa Smith (Greg Farrow) Decaturville, four sisters; Dorothy Patterson of Finger, Mildred Smith of Henderson, Louise Bennett of Georgia, and Darlene Reese of Nashville, AR, 15 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son Tommy Greene, and two sisters Martha Newsom and Billie Jean Carter.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Ken Kitchen officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors at New Friendship Cemetery.
