Wayne was born in Carstairs, Alberta, Canada to William and Nellie May Gilbert. The family moved to Aumsville in 1941. Wayne graduated from Aumsville High School in 1946 and attended 1 year at Oregon College of Education (WOU).

He married Patricia Tallmon on June 18, 1948, and together they raised two children.

Wayne worked at the local cannery during WWII and as a substitute rural mail carrier from 1952 to 1954, but spent most of his life farming. After he retired from farming in 1993, he devoted his time to the Lone Oak Cemetery until 2016.

Wayne was involved with the Grange, Masons, Eastern Star, Oddfellows, Rebekahs, and Shriners. He was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Stayton as well as the local cannery, now Norpac. He enjoyed farming, reading, yardwork, sports, and most of all his family.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Patricia; his son, Wayne William Gilbert Jr; son-in-law, David Paul Walczyk; and siblings: Claude William Gilbert, Marion May Steele and Irene Mattie Gilbert.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Elaine Walczyk; grandchildren: Jason Donavan Gilbert, Jessica (Kevin Parker), Deanne Gilbert, Andrea (Ken) Elaine Naumann, and Alexander (Kate) Wayne Walczyk; and great-grandchildren: Lola and William Naumann, and Cheyenne Allmond.

Graveside service on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Lone Oak Cemetery in Stayton.
