US Senator. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of New Mexico in the United States Senate from 1973 until 2009. Born to Italian immigrants, he studied at the University of New Mexico and later received his degree from Denver University Law School. After passing the bar, he practiced in his native Albuquerque, prior to entering the political arena, when he was elected to the Albuquerque City Commission (becoming chairman). During his tenure in the US Senate, he served as Chairman of the Committee on the Budget and served on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. He held the distinction as being the longest serving US Senator from the State of New Mexico.
