Fern E. Dahlgren,97, of Las Cruces passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2017. Fern was born April 8, 1920 near Kewadin, Michigan. After finishing high school, she went on to complete her Registered Nurse Training in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1941. Fern Fox married Paul Dahlgren on April 16th, 1944. They moved with their family of three children to Las Cruces, New Mexico in 1954. She continued to practice nursing privately and at Memorial Medical Hospital. In the early 1960’s she began teaching Practical Nursing. While raising a family, teaching and practicing nursing she went back to college at NMSU. This culminated in her earning a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters of Arts Degree. In 1972 NMSU added a Practical Nursing Program, where Fern continued to teach until her retirement in 1984. Fern received numerous awards and accolades to include, NMSU Outstanding Alumna (1987), NMSU Distinguished Alumni Award (1987).
Fern was a dedicated and active member of her community to include her involvement in the Storytellers League, Bridge Club and Church organizations.
She is preceded in death by her husband Paul M. Dahlgren. She is survived by her daughter Diane Hahn (Albuquerque, NM), sons Steven Dahlgren (Las Cruces, NM) and Eric Dahlgren (El Paso, TX). Her grandchildren Alma DeLilla (Seattle, WA), Matthew Dahlgren (Ann Arbor, Michigan), Paul Dahlgren (Las Cruces, NM), Jennifer Dahlgren-Richardson (Las Cruces, NM), Elizabeth Dahlgren (Arlington, TX). And her great-grandchildren: Nico, Cora, and Roger.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 14th, 2017 at St. Paul’s UMC at 1 PM.
