Shirley Townsend Dugan
June 3, 1930 - September 10, 2017

SHIRLEY TOWNSEND DUGAN, age 87, of Charleston, died Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Born June 3, 1930, at Charleston, to the late Edward Downs Townsend and Grace Prosser Townsend, she grew up in Charleston where she attended the Charleston United Methodist Church and was educated in the Charleston schools graduating in the class of 1947. Following high school, she earned her teaching certificate and taught several years at the Rush Ridge School in rural Mississippi County.

On July 12, 1951, she married Clifford Love Dugan, and he preceded her in death on November 16, 2010.

Clifford was the love of her life. They moved to the country and together they raised four sons, living on the family farm near Wyatt. They were active members of the Wyatt United Methodist Church until it closed. At that time they became members of the Charleston United Methodist Church.

Shirley was a devoted wife for nearly 60 years. Together, she and Clifford enjoyed spending time with their large circle of friends. They also loved to dance and they never passed up a good flea market. However, her biggest accomplishment in life was her family and the love they all share for one another. She loved to cook for her large brood and always had an extra chair at the table for their friends.

Surviving are her four sons and their wives, Cliff and Christie Dugan, Chris and Susy Dugan, Clay and Melissa Dugan and Clark and Sophie Dugan, all of Charleston. Nine grandchildren, Bryan (Julie) Dugan of East Prairie, Garett (Amanda) Dugan of Cape Girardeau, Scott (Amy) Dugan of Bertrand, Sarah (John) Nothdurft of Gordonville, Emily (Anthony) Deuster of Sikeston, Matthew (Lauren) Dugan, Hunter Dugan, John Dugan and David Dugan, all of Charleston. Seven great grandchildren, Connor Dugan, Gavin Dugan, Taylor Nothdurft, Stella-Grace Dugan, William Dugan, Abigail Dugan and Mary-Grace Deuster. She was also expecting one great grandson and one great great grandson this coming winter.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her only sibling, her brother, Edward Townsend, Jr.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston where funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 14, 2017. Rev. J. Robert Webster, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Charleston, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.
