Doris Vivian Boshart Barclay, 91, died Friday. Born in Marshall County, Alabama to Green Sanford Boshart and Estelle Hodges Boshart, she moved with her family to Madison County at an early age. She graduated second in her class from Madison County High School, and later pursued a career at Genesco in Huntsville. After her sons were born, she became a fulltime homemaker and mother.

On February 23, 1951, she married the love of her life, Clyde Nolen Barclay, and they were happy together for 62 years until his death on May 23, 2013. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Reba Boshart Sapp.

After her husband retired from the United States Army Missile Command, the couple traveled to all fifty states and throughout Canada. They enjoyed square dancing and weekly breakfasts with friends. For many years they hosted an annual Labor Day breakfast for friends and family at the Green Mountain Nature Trail pavilion. They faithfully attended Trinity United Methodist Church, where they were charter members, and where she served on the altar guild. They enjoyed membership in the Huntsville Botanical Garden, the Huntsville Museum of Art, the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute and Senior Horizons.

She actively served her community. For more than forty years, she volunteered on Fridays at the blood donor room at the local chapter of the American Red Cross. She kept the toddler nursery at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sundays for more than fifty years. With her husband, she delivered Meals on Wheels once or twice each month for more than thirty years. She was a volunteer election official for the Madison County Probate Judge’s office for more than thirty years, and she never missed an opportunity to cast her own vote in every election. She was a Cub Scout den mother for both her sons.

On September 8, 2012, when she was 85 years old and her husband was 95 years old, they were profiled in The Huntsville Times. In an article describing their still- ongoing volunteer work, their active lifestyle and their devotion to one another, she said she considered raising their sons their “greatest achievement.”

Doris Barclay was a devoted wife and an exemplary, loving mother and grandmother who will be missed by her family and friends.
