Age 95, of Yorkville, Illinois, passed away Monday, May 1, 2017. She was born August 17, 1921, to Arthur and Carrie (nee Best) Barton in Big Rock, IL. On June 8, 1946, Jean was united in marriage to Donald W. Stewart and they spent the next 65 years together. Jean and Don farmed in rural Yorkville while raising their family. She was an active and faithful member of the Au Sable Grove Presbyterian Church and served in many capacities, most notably one of the first women elders of the church. A teacher all her life, she returned to the public school system and taught in Plattville and Yorkville for many years after her youngest, James, went to school. After retiring from teaching, she spent a number of years as a librarian at the Yorkville Public Library.
Jean is survived by her children - Sharon (Ronald) Clayton of Loudon, TN, Linda (Paul) Wissmiller of Yorkville, Judy (Wesley) Henne of Niantic, IL, William (Deborah) Stewart of Sheridan, IL and daughter-in-law Teresa Stewart of Newark, IL; her grandchildren Lisa (John) Paul, Derek (Jennifer) Clayton, Amy (John) Murray, Mary (Aaron) Perkins, Lynette (Greg) Bayer, Quintin (Staci) Wissmiller, Peter (Marsha) Henne, Greg (Stephanie) Henne, Lisa (Chuck) Beaird, Rebecca Stewart, Jessica Stewart; 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchilden; several nieces and nephews; and her sister Mary Ellen (Barton) Bushnell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband Don, her brother Wesley Barton, her son James Robert Stewart and her grandson Scott William Stewart.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Au Sable Grove Presbyterian Church from 9:30 am until noon. Funeral service will be held immediately following officiated by Reverend Jennifer Olsen. Cremation Rites have been accorded.
