North Augusta, SC – Funeral Services for Mr. Jon R. “Chief” Williams, 68, of North Augusta, SC, who entered into rest September 9, 2017, will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the First Baptist Church of North Augusta. Rev. Roy Kiser, Dr. Billy Thurmond, and Dr. Randy Cooper officiating. Private family interment in Pineview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Williams, fondly known as “Chief,” was a lifelong resident of North Augusta. He was a member of and former Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church of North Augusta, a 1967 graduate of North Augusta High School, a 1971 graduate of Furman University with a BA, and a recipient of a master’s degree in Administration from the University of South Carolina. “Chief” was a teacher at North Augusta Junior High School (1971-1973), North Augusta High School (1973-2005), and Curtis Baptist High School (2007-2009); in retirement, he was also a volunteer teacher for Megiddo Dream Station. He taught numerous subjects including History, Economics, Western Civilization, Business Law, Political Science, AP/IB History courses, IB Theory of Knowledge, PE classes. At North Augusta High School, he served as Sponsor of the Senior Class, Social Studies Department Chairperson, and a member of numerous other school committees, including NAHS Goals for the Year Committee and SACS Philosophy Committee. He was listed in “Who’s Who of American Teachers” and was the recipient of the NAHS Sandspurs 1977, 1988, and 1994 Yearbook Dedications.

“Chief” had a deep love of athletics, especially for his alma mater North Augusta, having coached football and basketball at North Augusta Junior High as well as basketball, golf, and tennis at North Augusta High School, where he was the “Voice of the Jackets,” the 1987-1988 Region III Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, and the coach of the 1988 Region III AAAA Golf Champions. While an athlete himself at North Augusta, he was named a 1965 and 1966 NAHS Star Football Player of the Week. He also coached at Curtis Baptist Church High School and voluntarily assisted Head Coach Jim Buist at Wardlaw High School.

Mr. Williams was a former member of the North Augusta Sertoma Club and North Augusta 2000. He served as a counselor with the AA organization. He was a recipient of the 2004-2005 Service to Mankind Awards from both the North Augusta Sertoma Club and the Sertoma Sandhills Region. Jon worked at the Masters Golf Tournament for 45 years. His interests included reading, golf, and studying and watching videos about WWII. The things that were most important to Jon were glorifying and serving the Lord, his love of family, teaching and coaching, and serving his community.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Karen Howe Williams; a son and daughter-in-law, J.R. and Jenifer Williams, North Augusta,SC; two grandchildren, Brayden Poorvin and Sadie Williams; mother, Helen Ernestine Shomaker Valois, Evans, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Sara Twiggs and Fred Ilardi, North Augusta,SC. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Hughes Williams, and a brother, Paul Farthing, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Leo Boehmer, Rod Greenway, Tommy Starnes, Dick Stelling, Ben Watson, and Kelly Zier.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 5 until 7.
