Believe he was born about 1766 in Virginia.
His burial in this cemetery is placed by an 8/7/1931 column in the Yorkville Enquirer reporting on the overgrown family burial ground "located not far from Tirzah ARP church". The writer reports the tombstone inscription included below.
A footnote to the article states: "Yorkville's first Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1824 by Rev. William Gassaway and Rev. Joseph Holmes according to church history." This church is now Trinity United Methodist Church at 22 East Liberty Street in York, South Carolina.William, Fifth child of Six, Fifth Son of James Sr., and Rachel Gassaway.

To the memory of Rev. Willliam Gassaway, a member of the So. Car. Conference. A Hero of Methodism for sixty years. A laborious and useful Preacher of the Gospel. Died Sept. 1833. Also in Memory of Rebecca his Wife and Nancy his Daughter. Erected by Rev. Jno. W. Kelly and Members of the Methodist Church.
